Lord of the Rings: The Musical?

There is a Yahoo! news article out titled “‘Lord of the Rings’ spectacularly dull on stage.” (I would argue it’s fairly dull in any format…but I digress.)  I don’t know whose bright idea it was to make a Lord of the Rings musical, but I can’t say I’m surprised it’s boring.  This giant book (and no, I haven’t read it) was made into three exceedingly long, exceedingly slow, exceedingly dull movies.  And someone thought music would spice it up?

The show has a cast of 55, runs for 3.5 hours and cost $27 million to produce.  Its creators are saying it’s not a musical, or a play with music, but rather a “new genre of theatre,” and a “theatrical spectacle.”  Right.  If only someone had thrown the book for the musical into the fiery volcano along with the “one true ring,” which is where it really belongs.

Now I suppose we’ll it’s only a matter of time before Harry Potter: The Musical and The Musical Chronicles of Narnia.  I can’t believe JRR Tolkein’s family let his books be used this way!

…*loves the movies*…

But it was a stupid-ass idea to make it a musical.

Although The Hobbit is a good play.
